Urgent-care visits move quickly. A student may be sick, uncomfortable and eager to leave. That makes it easy to nod through instructions without fully understanding them. Before walking out, every student should be able to answer five questions.
- What do you think is happening?
Ask for the working diagnosis in plain language, including what has been ruled out and what remains uncertain. “We are not sure yet” can be an appropriate answer—but it should come with a plan.
- What should I do when I get home?
Confirm medications, hydration, food, activity restrictions and other care instructions. Ask whether new medications interact with anything the student already takes and whether written instructions will be available.
- What should improve—and by when?
A useful plan includes a timeframe. The student should know what improvement may look like and when a lack of improvement becomes a reason to call or return.
- What warning signs require immediate help?
Ask the clinician to name the symptoms that should prompt emergency care, another urgent visit or a phone call. Write them down. Stress makes even important details surprisingly easy to forget.
- Who is responsible for follow-up?
If testing is pending or a specialist is needed, confirm who will contact the student, when that should happen and whom the student should call if they hear nothing. A vague “follow up” is not a complete plan.
