Your student sounds frightened. They may be in pain, unsure where to go or struggling to explain what they are feeling. You are trying to assess the situation through a phone while calculating how quickly you can get there. In that moment, families do not need more noise. They need a clear next step and someone nearby who understands the medical system.
First, slow the moment down
Ask where your student is, whether they are alone and whether they feel safe. Help them identify the appropriate level of care using the resources available to them, including campus health services, their physician, urgent care or emergency services. If the situation appears immediately dangerous, call emergency services. Then gather the basics: symptoms, timing, medications, allergies, insurance information and any recent medical history.
Help them prepare to be heard
Young adults may minimize symptoms, forget key details or leave an appointment unsure of what was decided. Encourage your student to write down what is happening and what they need to ask. Useful questions include: What are you concerned about? What tests are being ordered and why? What should happen next? What warning signs mean I should return? Who should I contact if I am not improving?
When a local presence changes everything
A phone call cannot sit beside your student in a waiting room, listen to discharge instructions or notice that a follow-up step remains unclear. Solenne Collegiate Care places an experienced nurse alongside the student when family cannot be there. We help translate information into plain language, track the plan and communicate with the family when the student has authorized it.
Support that respects independence
Collegiate Care is not about managing every decision for a student. It is about giving them informed support while they learn to navigate healthcare as an adult. Your student remains at the center. Solenne helps make sure they are not left alone with information they do not understand.
You may be far away. Support does not have to be.
When something happens, the distance to the answers matters. With a plan and a trusted local partner, families can move from frantic calls and incomplete information to clarity, presence and relief.
Do not wait for the first urgent phone call to decide what support will look like. Schedule a Collegiate Care consultation with Solenne.
