The car is packed. The residence hall details are saved. The tuition bill is handled. But if your student wakes up with severe abdominal pain, has an allergic reaction or needs follow-up after an urgent-care visit, does everyone know what happens next? A college health plan is not about expecting a crisis. It is about replacing last-minute confusion with a clear, shared plan.
Start with the information your student may need
Create one secure, easy-to-find health summary with current medications and dosages, allergies, health conditions, immunization information, insurance details, preferred pharmacy, primary care contacts and relevant specialists. Include the family contacts your student wants involved. Review it together, and make sure your student knows where it lives and how to access it.
Identify care before it is needed
Find the campus health center, the nearest urgent-care locations and the hospitals serving the area. Confirm hours, transportation options and how after-hours care works. If your student has an ongoing condition, ask whether a local physician or specialist should be established before the semester begins. The best time to learn how a new health system works is before anyone is sick.
Talk about communication and permission
Once a student is 18, parents may not automatically receive medical information. Families should discuss what the student wants shared, with whom and under what circumstances, then complete the appropriate authorization documents with guidance from the relevant providers or school. The goal is not to take away independence. It is to prevent uncertainty from becoming another burden during an already stressful moment.
Make sure someone can be there
Distance changes what parents can do in person. Solenne Collegiate Care gives families a trusted local partner when a student needs support during a medical appointment, an urgent evaluation or a hospital stay. Our experienced nurses help the student understand what is happening, ask useful questions, track next steps and keep the family informed when authorized.
A plan creates confidence
Your student is learning how to manage life independently. A thoughtful health plan supports that growth while making sure they do not have to navigate a complicated medical moment alone. Before move-in day, give your family something more valuable than another packing list: a plan everyone understands.
Send your student to campus with a plan—and a trusted partner nearby. Contact Solenne to learn how Collegiate Care supports students and families before, during and after a medical need.
